They say music is the universal language of the world, and although that may be true, it’s not the only one. Food also plays a huge role in introducing people to a whole new world of possibilities and uses your senses to allow you to discover different cultures. Let’s take a culinary adventure around the world and see what we find! Here are 5 dishes that’ll be sure to have you drooling on your keyboard:
1. Paella, Spain
You may have heard about this dish before, but it’s definitely too good to pass up! Paella is a rice dish from Spain, originating specifically from the province of Valencia. It usually consists of white rice, vegetables, saffron, and meat or a mix of meat of your choice (chicken, seafood, etc.) all cooked in a large shallow pan. Here’s the interesting part, since the rice is thinly spread in the pan, it causes the rice to turn into a crust at the bottom of the pan that is an important part of any paella. This is called socarrat, and once you achieve it, your paella is ready! Doesn’t that sound amazing! There are many variations to this Mediterranean dish, so the possibilities are endless!
2. Spanakopita, Greece
Traveling from one side of the Mediterranean to the other, Spanakopita is one of many favorite dishes in Greece. Essentially a spinach pie, it’s stuffed with feta cheese, onions, scallions and seasoning as well. The pie crust is traditionally made with layered phyllo dough, lightly doused with olive oil or butter, and baked to a crunchy perfection. Originating over 400 years ago, this Greek pastry is sure to appease people for another 400 years.
3. Peking Duck, China
Traveling thousands of miles to the east, we find Peking duck, originating from China’s capital city, Beijing. The duck is roasted and served in strips, sweet sauce, scallions and sometimes on a Chinese pancake. This tasty dish is most known for the duck’s thin, crispy skin; a fan favorite!
4. Locro, Andes mountain range
This hearty soup is popular in countries along the South American Andes such as Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador, and Argentina. It’s a classic made of corn, potatoes, and beans. This may sound like typical hearty soup, but the potatoes used in this dish are typically a special kind of potato called “papa chola” very specific to this region, known for its distinctive taste. How’s that for different!
5. Matoke, Kenya
Although also popular in other parts of East Africa, Kenyans cherish Matoke as their own. This African dish is made with a starchy banana variety cooked with tomatoes, onions, garlic and sometimes meat. As the bananas cook, everything starts to thicken, resulting in a very tasty stew.
